Indonesia Reinforces Climate Commitments at COP29
Jakarta, Indonesia – President Prabowo Subianto has expressed unwavering commitment to uphold prior climate agreements as the nation intensifies its efforts against climate change. This affirmation came during the unveiling of the Indonesian Pavilion at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP) 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Change, Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, outlined significant initiatives aimed at enhancing Indonesia’s role in global climate action.
Continuing Commitments to the Paris Agreement
At the COP29, which runs from November 11 to 21, 2024, Djojohadikusumo highlighted Indonesia’s robust adherence to the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation. He stated, "President Prabowo Subianto is committed to continuing the agreements made by the previous government." This commitment comes in response to global pressures to reduce carbon emissions and address environmental challenges.
Indonesia has outlined several ambitious programs designed to mitigate climate change effects, prioritizing the development of new and renewable energy (NRE) technologies. Key components include:
-
Creation of 100 gigatons (GT) of energy
This encompasses 75 GT derived from clean energy sources such as wind, hydropower, geothermal, solar, and nuclear energy.
-
Utilization of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)
Djojohadikusumo noted Indonesia’s CCS potential, estimated at up to 500 GT, underscoring the technology’s critical role in fossil fuel management and carbon reduction efforts.
- Rehabilitation of 12.7 million hectares of forest
This initiative aims to restore degraded land while supporting food security and maintaining biodiversity.
Engaging Stakeholders in Sustainable Practices
In tandem with these initiatives, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni emphasized the importance of sustainable forest management. He called upon diverse stakeholders, including businesses and local communities, to participate in preserving Indonesia’s rich forest ecosystems as a means to uplift community welfare and contribute to broader environmental goals.
Environment Minister Hanif Fasiol Nurofiq articulated the pavilion’s purpose, stating, "The Indonesian Pavilion serves as an essential platform to showcase our climate action on the world stage. It aims to facilitate collaboration between governments, NGOs, and the private sector." The pavilion under the theme "Sustainably Stronger Together" showcases Indonesia’s efforts and fosters partnerships to enhance climate resilience.
Carbon Credits and Economic Value
Furthermore, Djojohadikusumo revealed that Indonesia possesses an impressive carbon credit reserve of 577 million tons, available for trade with other nations keen on financing their climate change mitigation strategies. This positioning allows Indonesia to play a pivotal role in the global carbon market, offering opportunities for collaborative investment and development.
Looking Ahead: Indonesia’s Global Role
As COP29 progresses, Indonesia is keen on demonstrating its climate leadership while calling for collective global action against the escalating threats of climate change. With notable programs in place, the country is poised to make significant contributions to the climate agenda and showcase its commitment to sustainable practices.
The Indonesia Pavilion is not merely a showcase of achievements; it represents a commitment to shared global responsibilities in addressing climate change. Visitors and participants can explore innovative ideas, network for potential partnerships, and witness Indonesia’s resolve in the fight against climate change.
