Mexico City. The voices of more than a thousand mariachis singing “el son de la negra”, “el cielito linda” and “el Rey”, closed the first World Mariachi Congress this afternoon in the Plaza de la Constitución; act that broke a Guinness record for the largest number of these musicians in one performance.
“And may Guadalajara forgive us, but Mexico City is the capital of Mariachi,” said the capital’s government secretary, Cesar Cravioto at the end of the brief concert in which different groups of musicians participated.
He indicated that until now the record for this contest was held by Guadalajara with the participation of 700 mariachis, but today the record was broken here in the Zócalo of Mexico City, exceeding 1,132 musicians.
“Next year we are going to support them again so that the capital’s Zócalo is filled with attendees and in support of culture, which is one of the great axes of Clara Brugada’s government,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Alexandra Rojo de la Vega, mayor of the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office, cheered the mariachi, the mayor’s office and congratulated the event for breaking the record, and added, “here there is a will to do it every year, that the government of the City will surely give us a chance.”

The first World Mariachi Congress is an event that seeks to preserve mariachi music as intangible heritage of humanity, indicated the Chamber of Commerce that organized the event.
Chuy Salinas, a member of a mariachi group, indicated that after this first World Congress we hope that mariachi music can be reaffirmed in some countries and reach more parts of the world and more people will become more interested and in Mexico it will be reinforced among the new generations. ”.
David Cárdenas, from the Mayoral area of the Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that this first congress was the result of joint work for a year to bring together more than a thousand mariachis.
He highlighted that given the relevance of this congress, the authorities of the capital government have decided to move the closure from the Monument to the Revolution to the Zócalo.
