Patrik Antonius has been at the top of poker for over 20 years. He has seen everything, won everything and defeated everyone in an unstoppable march towards the Poker Hall of Fame.
But perhaps the toughest opponent of his entire career sat before him today in the Salle des Etoile, Monte Carlo, behind a long white beard and a carefree rookie attitude. Antonius had to dig deep into his vast reserves of determination to outlast Estonian newcomer Vladimir Korzinin and win the $200,000 Triton Invitational for $5.13 million.
That’s the biggest prize of Antonius’ incredible career, and he had to work for it against a man who only started playing poker a few months ago. At 69 years old, Korzinin is on a personal mission of dream fulfillment and learning, turning to poker to quench his insatiable thirst for knowledge and experience.
He found the Triton Series, signed up for this huge tournament, and there he was, in the final two of a 102-entry field, watching one of the greatest of all time.
