LG Energy Solution has announced that it will supply cylindrical battery cells for use in the new Rivian R2. LG revealed that the new battery cells will have a diameter of 46 millimeters and a height of 95 mm, and will be produced at its factory in Arizona, USA.
The new cylindrical battery cells promise to offer a higher energy density than the prismatic cell model. Additionally, they will be cheaper and lighter than current batteries, which Rivian says will lead to “a significant reduction in dollars per kilowatt hour (kWh) compared to the R1″.
Additionally, because they are larger than R1 batteries, the new batteries will contain fewer cells overall, making the manufacturing process more efficient.
The new battery cells will be installed on the new Midsize Platform (MSP), which makes its debut in the R2 and will also serve as the basis for the R3 and R3X models.
It is already known that this new platform from Rivian will support configurations with two and three electric motors, with an expected range of around 500 km and an acceleration capacity from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds.
