17-year-old soccer player Lily Yohannes has definitively selected for the United States national team. The KNVB tried to encourage Ajax talent to play for the Dutch team.

“The United States is my home country, it’s where I was born and where my family lives. I feel a deep connection to that country and that helped me in my decision than choose SA,” Yohannes writes on Instagram.

Yohannes was born in the United States but moved to the Netherlands when she was ten because of her father’s work. She was soon scouted by Ajax Women, where she eventually ended up in the main team through various talent squads.

Since she grew up in the Netherlands, the question remained for a long time which national team she would choose. However, she does not have a Dutch passport (yet), which meant that she could not play for the Dutch national team.

Last summer, the US national coach called her, and after that she immediately scored a goal in a friendly match with South Korea. In theory she could still change after her international debut, but she is not going to do that.
