Mexico City. Eduardo Nájera, one of the best tricolors who were in the NBA, recognized the talent of the Mexican-American Jaime Jáquez, who visits Mexico with the Miami Heat, but he also considered it important that the young basketball player decides whether he will defend the Mexican team or the USA.
“Unfortunately he went and put on the United States uniform (in training). So we are already doubting whether or not he will play with Mexico. He is like India María, he is neither from here nor from there. He must make a decision,” Nájera pointed out.
Jáquez, of Mexican descent, already played for the Tricolor team in the 2019 Pan American Games but only last summer did he train with the United States team. Now, the young basketball player has acknowledged that he has not yet made a decision.
“Let’s see how people receive it now, because Mexicans are loyal, but also bastards when someone behaves badly,” Nájera added.
The basketball player also remembered the games he played in Mexico with the Dallas Mavericks in 2003 and with the Denver Nuggets in 2006. Now, faced with the possibility that Jáquez will be the first Mexican in the NBA to win a duel in these cities with the Miami versus the Wizards, he said they are different situations.
“The games I played in Mexico were preseason, it’s different. On the other hand, the competition games are more complicated. Jaime has a chance to win this game because he faces the Wizards.”
Franchise possibility in Mexico
Nájera insisted on the possibility of bringing a league franchise to Mexico, assuring that it may even be a better market than some cities in the United States.
“There is a version that they will take a franchise to the owner of Amazon to take it to Seattle. We have already been in that city, I played there and the market was terrible. It doesn’t compare to what we have in Mexico City. The only problem “This is where we need someone to sign the check (for the investment),” he noted.
“Let’s hope it’s not just one game in Mexico a year. If we don’t have a franchise here, there should at least be 10 or 20 games per season for an NBA team. And above all, bring better teams, bring the Lakers or the Boston Celtics.”
