On April 6, 1917, the First World War raged on the Western Front. The German army withdrew from a sector of the Western Front in northern France. Aerial reconnaissance spotted that the Germans were not retreating but had made a tactical withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line, where they were awaiting the British. Two young British soldiers, lance corporals Will Schofield and Tom Blake, are tasked by General Erinmore with a seemingly impossible mission: with the lines of communication cut, they will have to cross no man’s land alone.

Produced by Kirk Douglas himself, the film was shot in Bavaria and was banned in France under de Gaulle, then authorized under Giscard. One of the last great black and white masterpieces.
