Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an infectious viral disease that affects the lower respiratory system, namely the larynx, trachea and bronchi. RSV is the main cause of bronchitis and pneumonia among children under two years of age, but it can affect the elderly and people with comorbidities, that is, several related conditions.
Doctors at the hospital tell us that the first symptoms of RSV infection are similar to the common cold, such as fever, stuffy nose and mild cough. Severe cases can cause breathing problems, low blood oxygen and respiratory failure. In these situations, the patient must be hospitalized urgently.
In patients suffering from chronic illnesses, doctors point out that RSV infection can lead to acute myocardial infarction, stroke, exacerbation of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), but also long-term deterioration in the respiratory function.
“RSV is responsible for more than 33 million lower respiratory tract infections, of which approximately 3.2 million require hospitalization, and causes more than 100,000 deaths each year, mostly among children young
RSV infection is underdiagnosed in adults. Pathophysiology, clinical presentation and epidemiology of RSV infections contribute to the underdiagnosis of the disease”, say the doctors of Victor Babeș Timișoara Hospital.
The number of RSV cases and hospitalizations increases during the fall and winter months.
To reduce the risk of RSV infection, doctors recommend proper hand hygiene, avoiding contact with sick people and crowded places.
