OAKA 2.0: The roof of the swimming pool bent – “Sat” part of the diving pool –

Part of the diving pool at OAKA “sat” due to the weight of materials intended for its restoration.

The Olympic facilities at OAKA are slowly but surely being dismantled piece by piece, with the risk of a serious accident. This time another problem appeared in the Olympic swimming pool, as a few days ago part of the roof bent and almost collapsed, with unknown consequences. This happened last Saturday (1/11) when work was to start on the total waterproofing of the roof of the indoor swimming pool. We remind you that last March – as Documento had revealed at the time – after a heavy rain in Attica, its roof opened, creating a large waterfall with water falling into the central pool while athletes and parents ran to escape the worst.

They left one by one

The problem section was directly above the diving pool and nearly broke when the repair contractor placed various materials on the roof. Some

moment that point could not bear the weight, it bent and almost pierced. Panic set in when those in the pool heard the noise and left one by one to avoid any untoward incident.

And while the Olympic swimming pool has huge problems even in the outer walls of the central pool, with obvious signs of corrosion from moisture, the government is satisfied with the communication part and advertises the millions it will allocate for the reconstruction and maintenance of the Olympic facilities. Documento with continuous publications since April 2023 points out the abandonment and decay at the site of the facilities, but instead of timely repair of the damages, the government constantly states the sums it will allocate to make the facilities safe.

But even so, the amounts vary from statement to statement. And from the 52 million euros that Kyriakos Mitsotakis had declared in 2021, the amount was later raised to 80 million. and we arrived a few days ago with a statement of if. Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis at 111 million. euro!

“As a government we are implementing our commitment, we are gradually utilizing the 111 million euros from the Recovery Fund for all the necessary work at OAKA and the emblematic Olympic center of our Greece, where the heart of our sport beats. Over the next three years it will transform

and again in an ornament, in a landmark not only of sport but also of culture and entertainment, as befits it,

as it deserves in our society” characteristically stated G. Brutsis. Exactly the same in meaning had been declared by the prime minister at another fiesta in OAKA, in July 2021 Mr. Mitsotakis: “I have no doubt that the new OAKA will also be the living advertisement of Greece that not only we all envision, but that we can now confidently and confidently conquer”.

Three and a half years have already passed since then, not a single thing has happened and the… vision will continue for three more. The only difference is in the amount that will be required for the maintenance and restoration of the damage to the Olympic facilities at the OAKA. Then it was 52 million. euro, now 111…

They restore the useless

So while the facilities are slowly deteriorating and falling apart, with whatever big or small risks exist for the safety of athletes and spectators, for the government the priority is the work of the complete restoration… of the metal structures of the two entrances of the OAKA (Wall of Nations and Agora) , as on Friday, November 1, the contract for the project was signed in the amount of 5.5 million. euro. A project that, as far as the Wall of Nations is concerned (it was built especially for Athens 2004), the 250-meter iron structure is no longer useful for anything and has nothing to symbolize or remind of the 2004 Olympic Games…
