“Michael Jackson called me maestro” / “Today I would be Elon Musk if…”

81 years old and a “fiber” that would be the envy of anyone, Al Bano Carrisi recently made some statements that caused a sensation in the world of gossip. From a very young age he chased the dream of music, flying from Puglia until Milano to then become what we all know, one of the most important artists of Italian music. In an interview with Corriere della SeraAl Bano confessed that he had been repeatedly tempted to move abroad, such as to Monte Carlo, Paris or the United States.

Contrary to what one might think, however, the famous Apulian artist wanted to invest heavily in Italy, especially in Puglia. His regret? That of not having invested enough in Milan: “Today I would be more or less like Elon Musk“, admits Al Bano: “given the house prices…“. Indeed, Milan was his first port of call, a welcome that did not come immediately, given that he was initially denied acceptance in a convent. At that time he had started working as house painter for free and then became a worker and waiter in the Lombard city.

Al Bano, why do many of your songs talk about war? “I saw my father for the first time when…”

Al Bano he has an incredible career, which few in Italy have managed to create, even among the greatest in music. Clearly, over time he found himself meeting many international stars, and among them the figure of Michael Jackson. And it was he who spoke to Corriere della Sera, explaining that he had sued the pop star for plagiarism. Before meeting in court, however, the sudden news of the death of the “King of Pop” arrived, frustrating everything. “I have incredible memories of him“, says Al Bano, “He called me master“.

Then the theme of war, for which he has always been highly criticized. Yet the theme often recurs in his lyrics. The reason? During his childhood he saw his father for the first time while the latter was returning from the war. A moment that shocked him and marked him for the rest of his life. And about Putin? “I sang in front of him many times“, declared Al Bano, “I can say that he is the most Western of all Russians, I think he was badly advised“. Often Al Bano he was accused of being in favor of the Russian President, but perhaps his words are the result of the deep bond he has always established with his beloved Russia.
