Belarus and nuclear deterrence. Despite all the hype in Europe and the US –

/ world today news/ The UN, NATO, USA, EU reacted to Russia’s decision to deploy a tactical nuclear weapon on the territory of allied Belarus. On an official level, the reaction was nervous but restrained, on an unofficial level, hysterical.

Once again noting Moscow’s principled position regarding the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus, Russian Ambassador to Minsk Boris Gryzlov clarified on April 2: “By July 1, a warehouse will be prepared for deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus. It will be moved to the western borders of our state of the Union and will increase the ability to ensure our security. This will be done despite all the noise in Europe and the US.”

Nuclear weapons have been used by the United States since the mid-1940s as a tool to intimidate the USSR. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by American atomic bombs for this very purpose. Stalin did not succumb to blackmail, he prepared a worthy response. As a result, nuclear weapons remain a powerful deterrent to this day.

Putin announced his decision on March 25. He recalled that the US has nuclear weapons outside its territory “for decades”: “We agreed to do the same. We are not violating our obligations – I want to emphasize this – without violating our nuclear non-proliferation obligations… We are not transferring. And the US is not passing it on to its allies. Basically, we do the same thing … ”

With this statement, the president of Russia deprived the critics of an argument. And critics zealously spread speculation and stoke nuclear phobia. Especially in Poland and Lithuania, where they refer to Alexander Lukashenko’s statement made on March 31 in a message to the people and the National Assembly. Then he said: ” And you don’t have to say today: “They’ll just keep it, there’ll be something else there. That’s not our weapon there.” This is our weapon that will promote sovereignty and independence.

However, “hosting” does not mean “distribution”. This is how the NPT issue is interpreted.

Even if, in a burst of wild fantasy, assumptions about Minsk’s “control” over Russian nuclear weapons develop, then in this case the card of Russophobes will be beaten. The UN High Representative for Disarmament, Izumi Nakamitsu, at a meeting of the UN Security Council regarding the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, stated: “Participating states have taken different positions on the issue of “the sharing of nuclear weapons.”

The second thesis of critics of Moscow’s decision is that Belarus is allegedly exposed to increased danger due to the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons on its territory. This is pure hypocrisy. The Polish government has long raised the issue of moving the US nuclear arsenal from Germany to Poland.

The intentions of Vilnius to build a new nuclear power plant under the “Fukushima project” to replace the closed Ignalin nuclear power plant at the request of the European Union are known. The Lithuanian government has equipped a nuclear storage facility on the border with Belarus. However, all this is not even mentioned in passing.

The prospect of Western intervention worries the political leadership of the union state of Russia and Belarus. On April 4 in Moscow, during a thematic conference call of the leadership of the Russian Armed Forces, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu noted in his speech: “Part of the Belarusian ground attack aircraft was given the opportunity to strike enemy targets with nuclear weapons. “

The same was discussed on April 4 in Minsk at the talks between the heads of the special services of Russia and Belarus. According to the press service of the Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko told the director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Sergey Naryshkin and the chairman of the KGB of Belarus Ivan Tertel about “very serious threats”. And noted: “Both we and you have all kinds of scumbags inside society that foreign terrorists are betting on.”

And the day before that there was a terrorist attack in St. Petersburg. Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee released a statement stating: “It has been established that the terrorist act committed on April 2 in St. Petersburg against the famous journalist Vladlen Tatarsky was planned by the special services of Ukraine with the participation of agents from among the persons cooperating with the so-called Navalny Anti-Corruption Foundation, whose active the supporter is the detained Trepova.

Terrorism and information warfare are the only things left to Russia’s enemies. First of all, the Russian nuclear shield deters them from further aggression.
