The Republican candidate, Donald Trumpwas proclaimed this Wednesday winner of the elections in USA and will return to White Houseafter a hard-fought electoral campaign, to become the country’s 47th president.

Trump surpassed the 270 electoral votes necessary to declare himself the winner over his rival, the Democratic candidate and Vice President of the Government, Kamala Harris.

Under the US suffrage system, the president is proclaimed by the Electoral College, a body made up of 538 delegates who elect states based on their population.

The winning candidate in each state, even by a single vote, takes all of his delegates with the exception of Nebraska y Maine and the candidate who reaches 270 wins the elections.

Before the results were known, the former president had already claimed victory over Harris during a rally before his followers in Palm Beach (Florida), after verifying his good partial results and winning the popular vote.

It will be the first time in more than a century that a former president returns to office (he already governed between 2017 and 2021) after losing an election (those in 2020) and also the first time that a convicted criminal becomes President of the country. .

A polarized country

Accompanied by his family and campaign managers, the former president assured from Palm Beach that he will govern for everyone and that “together” they will make a better United States.

«Success is going to unite us, and we are going to start by putting America first. “I will not let you down,” he said during a speech lasting less than half an hour at the Palm Beach convention center (on the east coast of Florida).

The former Republican president thanked each of the members of his family and the Americans in a statement that had a conciliatory tone and in which he invited them to leave “the divisions of recent years behind.”

Trump celebrated his good results in key states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, and boasted of having regained the majority in the Senate for the Republicans, while control of the House of Representatives remains up in the air.

Before completing the count and after learning some important data about the voting trend throughout the country, Harris decided to cancel the speech she was scheduled to give at the end of election day and postponed it until this Wednesday, according to her campaign.

Win the popular vote

The Republican has also won the popular vote (more than 71 million votes compared to Harris’ 66, according to preliminary scrutiny data), something that the Republicans had not achieved in 20 years, since the 2004 elections in which the Republican George W. Bush He achieved 59 million votes compared to the Democrat’s 55.4 John Kerry.

In the 2016 elections, Trump arrived at the White House after having won the electoral vote (306 votes), but in the popular vote he fell almost three million short (63 compared to 65.8 million) of his then rival, the Democrat Hillary Clinton.

The billionaire’s victory has been received with increases in stock markets around the world, while most political leaders have congratulated Trump and hoped that his mandate prioritizes international cooperation.

The extreme right celebrates

But it has been the leaders of far-right formations and governments who have endorsed the victory of the Republican, with whose program they identify.

From Argentina (Javier Milei), Italy (Georgia Meloni), El Salvador (Nayib Bukele), India (Narendra Modi) or Hungary (Viktor Orban), their leaders declared victory alongside Trump, with messages that others have joined. ultranationalist or populist leaders from around the world such as former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

In a less euphoric tone, the majority of European presidents and heads of state, after congratulating the winner, have called on Trump to collaborate to improve the transatlantic relationship and work together for peace.

“Through NATO, the United States has 31 friends and allies who help advance U.S. interests, multiply American power, and keep Americans safe.”stated, for his part, Mark Rutte, secretary general of an organization with which Trump had a tense relationship in his previous mandate.

And outside of politics, the magnate’s reaction drew attention. Elon Muskone of the richest men in the world and who has expressly supported Trump in the campaign, who was excited on his social network, X. EFE (I)
