- OpenAI’s popular Microsoft-backed chatbot ChatGPT is back online following an outage that affected thousands of users, the company announced Friday.
- Most users’ access was restored by 4:34 p.m. PT, according to OpenAI, but a small number of customers continued to experience difficulties until 5 p.m.
- Outage tracking website Downdetector.com said ChatGPT’s services were down for about half an hour, affecting more than 19,403 users as of 7:13 p.m. ET (0013 GMT Saturday).
Supported by Microsoft OpenAI Amazon’s popular ChatGPT chatbot is back online following an outage that affected thousands of users, the firm announced on Friday. Most users’ access was restored by 4:34 p.m. PT, according to OpenAI, but a small number of customers continued to experience difficulties until 5 p.m.
Outage tracking website Downdetector.com said ChatGPT’s services were down for about half an hour, affecting more than 19,403 users as of 7:13 p.m. ET (0013 GMT Saturday).
“The issues with ChatGPT have now been resolved,” OpenAI said in a statement on its website.

Open a new AI domain
OpenAI has acquired Chat.com, one of the Internet’s oldest and best-known domains, originally established in 1996. Starting today, anyone typing Chat.com will be directed to ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot of ‘OpenAI. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman teased the acquisition with a quick tweet that simply said “Chat.com,” adding a layer of mystery to the event.
The acquisition of chat.com is part of OpenAI’s overall goal to rebrand and make its products more accessible to a global audience. The dropping of the “GPT” in the domain name follows OpenAI’s release of a new series of reasoning models starting with “o1.”
ChatGPT User Base
Since its introduction in November 2022, ChatGPT has gained 250 million weekly active users. OpenAI’s valuation increased from $14 billion in 2021 to $157 billion, with sales increasing from 0 to $3.6 billion, significantly exceeding Altman’s expectations at the time.
