Preston Mattingly, a son of former star first baseman and manager Don Mattingly, was promoted to general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies Friday under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.
Sam Fuld, general manager of the Phillies since December 2020, will share duties with Mattingly. But Fuld is studying for his master’s degree in business administration at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and will become the team’s president of business operations when he graduates in May 2026.
“Sam and Preston are two of the best young men in baseball,” Dombrowski said.
“They are exceptional in every way. We have a good relationship between all of us and, really, you look to the future and wonder how is this all going to work? »
The 68-year-old Dombrowski is under contract with the Phillies through the end of the 2027 season, meaning he can let Mattingly learn the trade under his supervision for three seasons. Then, if Dombrowski decides to retire, the Phillies will already have his successor in place.
“I believe he has the skills to be the general manager and head of baseball operations for many years,” Dombrowski said.
Mattingly, 37, played in the minor leagues from 2006 to 2011. He worked with the San Diego Padres from 2017 to 2021 and joined the Phillies as director of player development in September 2021.
Last November, he was promoted to assistant general manager of player development.
