Sony Sticks to PSN Account Requirement for PC Games: Controversy Over Single-Player Titles and Online Standards

It seems that Sony is completely without refusing from the idea of wanting PSN accounts for your PC games. The other day, the company’s president Hiroki Totoki tried to explain to investors why this is so important – they say, all because of a “safe” gaming environment.

“You know, we’ve learned a lot lately,” Totoki said. He admitted that not everyone likes the requirement to create a PlayStation account, but he is convinced that it is important to create the “right environment” for game services. True, he immediately declared that the company does not want to limit anyone at all, but that it is just trying to establish certain “standards of conduct”.

The most striking example of how this works is in the use of the story Helldivers 2 download. Initially, the game was released without being connected to PSN, reportedly due to technical difficulties. And in May, when Sony decided to end the “grace period”, there was such a disturbance that the company had to go back. True, at first she tried to hold out on her own, which greatly spoils the reputation of the previously successful game.

Helldivers 2 removed from sale on Steam in 170 countries

But the happiness was short lived. Soon Ghost of Tsushima disappeared from Steam in almost 200 countries – all because of the same PSN requirement for multiplayer. Sony then confirmed that God of War: Ragnarok I can’t do it without PlayStation Network. And in October the same story happened again Horizon: Zero Dawn remastered.

Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut removed from sale on Steam in more than 180 regions

And here a clear contradiction appears in Totoki’s words. If the account requirement for online games is still understandable – if you want to play on Sony’s servers, follow its rules – then why connect single-player games like God of War or Horizon to PSN? Yes, it’s easy and free to create a PSN account, but why this problem? Even BioWare put special emphasis on that in the new one Dragon Age You can play without any restrictions. Well, Sony apparently decided to go its own way.
