With Donald Trump back in the White House, NBC News reports that special counsel Jack Smith has asked federal judge Tanya Chatkan to halt the president’s pending trial on charges related to trying to sway the 2020 election.
Continuing the case appeared untenable after Trump’s election victory on Tuesday, as Justice Department policy prohibits the prosecution of sitting presidents — which Trump will soon become again.
NBC News reports that in his deposition, Smith said that “as a result of the election,” he is “asking the Court to vacate the remaining dates of the pretrial schedule to allow the government time to evaluate this unprecedented circumstance.”
Smith’s request was accepted by the judge, according to a related announcement, and thus the prosecution against Donald Trump freezes and probably won’t be… reheated since soon a full four years will begin with Trump at the helm of the USA and his or her chosen in the ministry Justice.
