ROSTA – World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14th. A date chosen to commemorate the birth of Professor Banting who, together with his student Best, isolated insulin in 1921, changing the history of diabetes sufferers. Today there are around 300,000 people with diabetes in Piedmont, over 4,000,000 in Italy, 537 million in the world, with a continuously growing trend and a prevalence which in Italy stands at around 6.6% and in Piedmont it is slightly higher, around 7.1%. To these numbers must also be added those who have the disease but do not yet know it: in Italy around one million people. In fact, up to six or seven years can pass before the disease manifests itself and this is why prevention, in the case of type 2 diabetes mellitus, is particularly important and effective. World Diabetes Day offers the opportunity to talk about it. This year the theme chosen is “Diabetes and well-being”, to go beyond health and be able to live every day to the fullest.
DIABETES IN ASLTO3
People with diabetes require ongoing care and support to manage their condition and avoid complications. In ASL To3, the Departmental Structure of Endocrine Diseases and Diabetology, directed by Doctor Enrico Pergolizzi, deals with it. The service is divided into the offices of Avigliana, Collegno, Giaveno, Orbassano, Pinerolo, Pomaretto, Rivoli, Susa and Venaria Reale. It currently cares for 35,756 people with diabetes, with a number of specialist services which, from the beginning of the year to date, has been over 30,000, with almost a thousand new diagnoses of type 2 diabetes and 45 of type 1 diabetes. There are 454 pregnant women with gestational diabetes followed in ASL To3, a marked increase compared to the past. Patient management takes place in an integrated manner with the general practitioner. Once stabilized, the person suffering from diabetes is taken care of by his family doctor, who takes care of the continuous surveillance of the disease, with an agreed test plan. Only in case of specific needs, such as a worsening or renewal of temporary therapies, the patient is sent again to the company diabetes service. Thanks to a Telemedicine system active throughout the ASL To3 area, the renewal of treatment plans is also possible remotely. The control tests are transmitted by the doctor through a specific channel directly to the diabetologist, who evaluates the renewal and in turn retransmits it, with the same electronic methods, to the doctor, for prescriptions and subsequent checks; all this avoiding the patient having to go to the clinic and optimizing company resources.
