Ivo Hristov: Bulgaria respects its contractual obligations in the EU and NATO, but it should not supply weapons to Ukraine –

/ world today news/ There is no way out of the crisis within the framework of the parliamentary republic. Compromise coalitions will not solve major societal problems.

Sofia, April 8, 2023 – “Politicians, analysts and media spend a colossal amount of time dealing with shams. If we have to speak in the language of television – at the moment the cameras are on zoom and watch some exhausted actors who enjoy neither the attention nor the trust of the audience. They conduct mock arguments among themselves, draw some red lines, take bright poses, make declarations. All this for the audience. It has nothing to do with the real stakes facing Bulgaria, which are war, inflation, impoverishment, justice, depopulation, crime.”

Thus, Ivo Hristov, a member of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the EP (S&D), commented on the air of the Bulgarian National Television about the political situation after the fifth extraordinary parliamentary elections in a row.

The main opposition to constitutional reform comes from those who created the current constitution, the political class that feeds off the current power scheme and all those talking heads who change the public agenda through orchestrated hysteria, using the same key words, defending the same ones”, Ivo Hristov was categorical.

The MEP commented on the pressure to form a regular government from the two major coalitions in the new parliament GERB-SDS and PP-DB. “The same people voted for “We continue the change” and “Democratic Bulgaria” with the expectation of defeating GERB and changing the corruption model. Now the same people are coming out with a petition in which they plead for PP-DB to form a coalition with GERB.”

According to Ivo Hristov, it would be a mistake to remove the institution of the official government in the Constitution, as the right-wing parties declare their intentions.

“They are proposing a constitutional reform that would remove the institution of caretaker government so that various coalitions can pass the baton to each other without these interludes ie. to perpetuate the impasse. Instead of solving the problem of delegitimized power, we will deepen it, make it endless, concrete it. The political forces, for which only a third of Bulgarians go to the polls, will be able to pass the baton of governance to each other, regardless of how dissatisfied the citizens are, regardless of what the public expectations are. Various forms of a fragmented parliament will be reproduced and we will again discuss whether these 3% together with those 5% can do something,” Hristov also said on BNT.

Asked to comment on how the president’s “uncontrolled power” can be curbed, Ivo Hristov said:

“Is this the final goal of Bulgarian politics – to remove President Radev? This may be the goal of the partocrats, but I don’t think it is the expectation of the Bulgarian people. In a presidential republic, the parties naturally consolidate, since there is one main stake of power, and that is the presidency. One of the advantages of a presidential republic is the elimination of fragmentation. At the moment, almost all parties are jumping against the presidential republic in order to preserve their small political business – sometimes fading, sometimes fleeting, but real”.

When asked if Rumen Radev does not lead an ambiguous policy regarding Ukraine in the EU and in our country, Ivo Hristov explained: “Bulgaria cannot sabotage decisions of the general format. In this sense, it basically follows the decision. Otherwise, it will rightly be accused of not being part of the Union. But “Bulgaria does not participate in the joint supply of ammunition for one billion euros,” the president said, and this is the only far-sighted and responsible behavior. There is no conflict between the two positions, but there is a campaign that aims to wrap a very clear statement by the president in a cocoon of disinformation so that the supplies can continue. Let this declaration not be heard, let it have neither domestic nor foreign policy effect. The goal is for everything to continue as before. Let us be part of the total package.”

The MEP emphasized that our country should not participate in “feeding this carnage” because “this is a battle for imperial influence in which Bulgaria has no place.”
