The President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb, was interviewed by CNN.
The President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb, once again showed his political acumen.
Stubb was interviewed by the American CNN. Both conservative and liberal interviewers have often tried to get Stubb to slip something snarky.
That’s what happened this time too. Journalist Christiane Amanpour asks the president in a sharp tone about, among other things, the future president of the United States, Donald Trump.
– Do you remember what it was like (in Trump’s first term)? People called him the cause of chaos. Different parts of the world had a kind of collective nervous breakdown for four years, Amanpour asks.
Stubb smiles at the question and says that he believes that people were rather surprised, as many imagined that Hillary Clinton would win the election.
The Biden Legacy
In the interview, it is interesting that Stubb mentions the future president several times, even when the reporter has not asked about him.
Amanpour asks Stubb, for example, to evaluate the foreign policy legacy and strengths of the sitting US president, Joe Biden, from a European perspective.
– The starting point for a small country like Finland is that both then President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump supported Finland’s NATO membership, Stubb says.
– It meant a lot to us.
Stubb praises that US foreign policy has been decisive during the war in Ukraine. In his opinion, the country’s foreign policy position on the war received support across party lines, especially in the early stages of the war.

“Ukraine can be said to have won”
Amanpour challenges Stubb, saying that Trump has never said who he hopes will win the war.
Stubb does not speculate on Trump’s thoughts, but uses the situation to poke fun at Russian President Vladimir Putin.
– Politically, Ukraine can be said to have already won, says Stubb.
– We have to look at what was President Putin’s goal. It was the Russification of Ukraine, the decentralization of Europe and NATO, and making sure that NATO does not expand.
– Well, what did he get? He got a European, Euro-Atlantic Ukraine, he got a unified European Union, he got a unified transatlantic cooperation, he got an invigorated NATO, and as a cherry on top, Finland doubled NATO’s border with Russia.
