In order to become a cycling hub city, Wonju City, Gangwon-do, is pursuing two key projects: ‘creation of an indoor cycle park’ and ‘installation of a bicycle path between Janghyeon Bridge and Jusan Bridge.’
The city plans to build a 973㎡ indoor cycle park in the multipurpose gymnasium in the southern complex sports center in Musil-dong.
The indoor cycle park is a space that can be used by all citizens and tourists who love bicycles, and provides customized programs that everyone from beginners to experts can participate.
The city is taking advantage of the advantage of being able to use it regardless of the climate and weather to strengthen things to enjoy in Wonju and to create a fun city.
In addition, a bicycle road will be installed connecting the 2km section between Jusan Bridge and Janghyeon Bridge in Hojeo-myeon and the 4 km section between Yeongnam Yuri and Seowonju Station in Jijeong-myeon.
In connection with the Four Major Rivers Bicycle Path, we are promoting the creation of a bicycle path stretching in all directions, passing through Wonju Stream and Heungho-ri, Buron-myeon, to Yeoju, Gyeonggi-do, and Chungju, North Chungcheong Province, as well as Seoul, Incheon, and Busan.
Won Kang-soo The mayor of Wonju said, “We will continue to do our best to help Wonju become a mecca for cycling by developing unique courses and expanding related infrastructure.”
Meanwhile, in line with the ‘bicycle tourism revitalization’ policy promoted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the city is creating an environment where people can travel easily and comfortably by bicycle. We plan to continue to promote related facility expansion projects to improve the health of citizens and revitalize the local economy by attracting tourists.
Wonju Stream Renaissance project underway… Pedestrian road improvement promoted
Wonju City, Gangwon-do, is promoting the Wonju Stream Renaissance Project to recreate Wonju Stream as a water-friendly space with vibrant culture and ecology, with the vision of ‘green waves, green forest paths.’
By 2025, a total of 12 billion won will be invested to create waterfront facilities in the 8.6km section between Dongbu Bridge in Dangu-dong and Hapsumori of Heungyangcheon.
In this section, the distinction between the existing bicycle path and the pedestrian path was not clear, causing inconvenience to pedestrians and cyclists, so a pedestrian path improvement project was carried out.
By spatially separating bicycle paths and pedestrian paths and using different road sign colors to ensure visibility, we not only increased convenience for users, but also ensured safety by preventing collisions between bicycles and pedestrians.
In addition, the safety of bridges and other facilities that are inevitably operated as both bicycle and pedestrian paths due to local rivers and small rivers joining the Wonju Stream is planned to be improved through structural improvement in consultation with the Wonju Regional Environmental Office.
In addition, as part of the Wonjucheon Renaissance Project, the Wonjucheon Park Golf Course construction project, which is being promoted in the area of Yeongjin Apartment in Taejang-dong, began construction last August and is currently in the process of cleaning up the surrounding environment, and is scheduled for completion in the first half of next year.
A city official said, “We will complete the project as soon as possible to improve the safety and convenience of citizens using Wonju Stream.”
