Residents of Antananarivo continue to experience long and frequent power cuts, especially at night.
Apart from unexpected outages during the day, many areas of the capital face power outages between 9pm and 6:30am. This phenomenon is becoming a daily reality for many households, disrupting their night life and domestic activities. A mother who lives in Ankadifotsy confirms that these long breaks are seen every night, as she is also forced to wake up in the middle of the night to water to be taken from Jirama, which only works between 1:00 am and 2:00 am.
Increase in yield
Despite this difficult situation, Jirama points out that electricity production has seen significant progress in the past few weeks. According to Manda Ny Aina Nomena, deputy director in charge of electricity production at the state company, the situation has improved significantly due to the regular supply of fuel oil. He explains that last Tuesday 18 tanker trucks arrived at the Ambohimanambola power station to supply heavy fuel oil for electricity production, followed by another 15 trucks the following day. These measures should make it possible to stabilize electricity production, especially for the Interconnected Network of Antananarivo (RIA), which serves the capital and its surroundings, up to Antsirabe.
Reduction of cuts
According to an explanation, the production deficit, which had reached 70 MW at the beginning of the week, was reduced to 20 MW as a result of these developments. “However, scheduled breaks are still essential, especially during peak hours, between 6pm and 10pm. As production increases, the need for load shedding gradually decreases, and there is only a gap of 10 MW, which still needs to be adjusted on the Jirama side “, said deputy director Manda Ny Aina Nomena. Despite this progress, consumers continue to experience regular power cuts, proving that efforts to reduce shortages are still not enough to meet customer needs.
