The ferry between Bremgarten and Zehndermätteli on the Enge peninsula in the city of Bern is to be replaced by a pedestrian walkway. The Bern community, the city of Bern and the community of Bremgarten have agreed to a loan of 300,000 francs for a corresponding project competition.
The fluctuations in the Aare level and sediment deposits have made the operation of the ferry more difficult for years, as the community wrote in a statement on Thursday. In winter, operations sometimes have to be stopped completely; in summer, there are restrictions when water levels are low.
In search of a solution, the three municipalities commissioned a study. They came to the conclusion that a pedestrian walkway at the location of the ferry was the best solution from an ecological, economic and social perspective.
Resistance to the project
However, the project is not without controversy: the population of Bremgarten was informed about the project in May, whereupon the “IG Pro-Fähre-Bremgarten-Bern” wrote an open letter demanding that the ferry be preserved. Almost 800 people signed the letter for the community of Bremgarten. Since then, there has been a discussion between the IG and the project team, according to the community.
As part of the project competition, the concerns of the population and the “IG Pro-Fähre-Bremgarten-Bern” should now be taken into account and integrated, as the communication continued.
The planning community wants to start the competition by the end of the year and expects to be able to present the results in the second half of 2025. The goal is to begin construction of the footbridge in 2027.
