2024 is the year of news: But where do journalists actually get their information and what rules apply to news offerings? These are the questions at stake at the ARD-wide Youth Media Day on November 13th, in which Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk is also taking part at its locations in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. Pupils from the 8th grade are invited to deal with the topic of media and media literacy on site and in digital workshops.
All over Germany, the third programs open their doors on the ARD Youth Media Day, offer workshops, invite you to discussions and give you the opportunity to do things yourself. The young people experience work processes in editorial offices and studios, produce media articles themselves and meet the makers of ARD offers on social networks. Tours of the production studios are also part of the program.
From micro to TikTok: MDR opens its doors
The MDR also opens its doors on November 13th: At the Leipzig headquarters of the MDR, for example, young people in an 8th grade can produce news themselves in the workshop “benachRICHTIGen – News in Social Media Times” and are trained in media skills in order to learn How to distinguish correct information from false reports. Other courses at MDR cover how videos can be successful on TikTok and how to produce them or how to speak correctly into a microphone so that the text comes to life so that it captivates the listener. The MDR state broadcasting centers in Dresden and Erfurt as well as the MDR program location in Halle (Saale) are also taking part in workshops for the Youth Media Day.
There are also numerous online offers for school classes: Among other things, in the live stream, ARD correspondents explain how they work, fact checkers give tips, and there is a “basic news course”. In addition, ARD journalists use a video conferencing tool to go into classrooms and create interactive teaching units. The sponsors of the ARD Youth Media Day this year are the Tagesthemen presenter Jessy Wellmer and the high school teacher Bob Blume, known as the “network teacher”.
