African leaders sent congratulations to Trump

Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential election on Tuesday night, is still in many parts of the world on the front lines of news and media programs.

On the continent of Africa, the media spoke in different ways about the race for the presidency of the United States that Trump won against Kamala Harris, the current vice president of the United States.

The Business Day newspaper from South Africa, wrote an article about Trump’s victory with the headline “Trump’s return carries a message about the tough way the United States will approach Africa.”

The Sunday Times asked its readers the question “Are you worried that Donald Trump has been elected President of the United States?”

African people have different opinions on how they see Trump’s personality. Some are saddened by the sarcastic and insulting words he described to the African continent during his first term, while others see him as a strong leader.

Steven Gruzd, a political analyst at the South African Institute of Foreign Affairs, told VOA that Trump did not pay much attention to Africa during his first term, but he did not expect much from it.

When we look at the African leaders who sent messages of congratulations to Trump’s victory, they include:

Kenyan President William Ruto, who recently paid an official visit to the United States after receiving the flu from President Joe Biden, praised the President-elect of the United States Trump. He described him as a man of “vision, courage and creative leadership.”

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said he hopes that Trump’s new term will bring economic benefits and development between Africa and the United States.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also said that he hopes to continue the “useful cooperation” between the two countries.

Finally, the president of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, expressed his concern about Trump’s second term. He asked himself the question.

“We’re in a climate crisis, so will America pull out of the Paris Agreement again? What will President Trump’s announcement be?”
