The Iranian student who was arrested on Saturday in Tehran after publicly undressing “has been transferred to a specialized care center,” the Iranian embassy in Paris said in a press release today.
“The student in question suffers from psychological fragility and was transported by ambulance from emergency services to a specialized care center,” according to the press release, which did not specify the name of the institution.
Earlier today, Iran’s Minister of Science, Research and Technology Hossein Shimaei called the young woman’s behavior “immoral,” without giving any indication of her fate.
The student at Tehran’s Azad University was arrested on Saturday after stripping to her underwear to protest harassment by security officials, who accused her of disobeying the strict Islamic dress code, according to activist groups who disclosed the case. .
In videos that soon went viral, the woman can be seen walking slowly in front of the university in her underwear, before being forcibly carried into a car by plainclothes men.
The NGO Amnesty International spoke to X yesterday about “disturbing information” regarding the transfer of the student to a psychiatric clinic and reminded that “the Iranian authorities equate the rejection of the mandatory use of the headscarf with a “mental problem” that needs “treatment” .
The student, a mother of two divorced from her husband, “as soon as her health is restored she will return to her studies at the university”, if the institution accepts her, added the embassy’s press release, insisting on the fact that it is a ” private matter”.
Denying any mental disorder, US-based activist Masih Alinejad described the student to X as “not only mentally healthy, but also a woman of courage and full of joy and energy,” citing sources who know her.
Since the revelation of the case, the young woman has emerged as a new symbol of the women’s struggle in Iran.
