Italian couple stopped in Argentina: the investigation focuses on intermediaries

The story of couple of Italian men stranded in Argentina with their newborn daughter born to a surrogate motherturned the spotlight on an investigation into suspected child traffickingeven if the two are not directly under investigation. In this regard, the lawyer defended the position of the couple and the child’s mother Fabiana Marcela Quainirecently interviewed on TGR (in copertina: Buenos Aires).

Possible human trafficking

According to the lawyer, Gestation for Others (GPA) would be permitted in Argentina, as confirmed by the Supreme Court. However, what makes the situation worse is the possible involvement in a human trafficking network and the intermediaries the couple allegedly relied on.

The lawyer Fabiana Quaini

As we told in a previous articlethis network operated with connections in the United States and maintained communications with the pregnant woman via timed messages, so as to hide any evidence. Furthermore, he would have taken care of take out health insurance for the biological mother and rent her an apartment in Recoleta, an exclusive neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

The couple has not been investigated, they may also be victims of this whole situation“, says Dr. Quaini. “Some judges believe that if there was a vulnerability of the surrogate mother, it would be human trafficking.”

The meeting with the surrogate mother, as told by the lawyerit would have happened informally through the woman’s sister, who had already completed a similar agreement in the past with another couple.

The block on returning to Italy

The couple had initially received authorization to leave together with the pregnant woman, who also wanted to accompany them to visit Italy, but the permit was revoked.

“The authorization was first granted, then it was cancelled”, continues lawyer Quaini. “The kids wanted to go back to work. So, according to the statements of the three, the girl would have asked to travel with them, stating that he didn’t need authorization, also because she wanted to get to know Venice a little. The two boys, however, they were afraid of losing their jobs in Italy”.

Currently, the two are facing difficulties in their return, as the issue has become part of a wider investigation into the network of intermediaries operating in this field.

“Justice focuses on intermediaries – concludes the lawyer – parents can be victims of this process. Without parents and without the surrogate mother, there would be no investigation, nor the judge necessary for the investigation.”
