Ev. Venizelos for US elections: A defining moment for the strategic status of the West –

Evangelos Venizelos made an intervention for today through the retrospective of 50 years of post-colonization, which he characterized as the “best period since the establishment of the Greek state”, at the event “The curve of post-colonization in Thessaloniki”.

In his speech, Mr. Venizelos pointed out that the major issues of our time, which the post-colonial period highlights, are not disconnected from each other, but are fully connected to internal, regional and international developments, “the international and domestic milestones” that they preceded, and contributed to the formation of the physiognomy of the modern Greek state.

A few days before the American elections and the arrival of the Turkish foreign minister in Athens, Mr. Venizelos noted that “society must be aware of the historical conditions that continue to influence geostrategy and government choices.”

“Maybe, all that we are discussing”, he said, “the delimitation of the maritime zones, the extent of the territorial waters, the issues concerning the air space, all those concerning the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, the regional situation in the Mediterranean, in The Balkans, in the large coastal region, in which, let’s say by historical award, we are a member, are they not sending us too close to the great demands of the beginning of the Revolution? When Alexander the Black-corded said to Metternich, that you know, we need a new dynamic all-living state, however small, which together with the declining Ottoman Empire will stop the descent of Russia into the warm seas, in the Mediterranean? Wasn’t this the reasoning behind the joint accession of Greece and Turkey to NATO in 1952? Is this not now the great strategic stake of the West in relation to the war in Ukraine, even in relation to the acute crisis in the Middle East? Is what is happening in the Middle East not connected to the so important for us in the Treaty of Lausanne, which we think concerns Greek-Turkish relations closely, while it concerns everything related to Syria, to Iraq, to the infamous Kurdish regions, to Libya , with anything that can be put on the table of a modern discussion, in view of the American presidential elections next Tuesday, which is the decisive moment for the strategic existence of the West?”.
