CDU chairman and candidate for chancellor Friedrich Merz made a short statement about the election victory:
“For 235 years, America has been able to do what Germany was only able to do much later: the free choice of a government of the people, by the people and for the people. In this long democratic tradition, the Americans have now decided who will lead their country as the 47th President of the United States of America for the next four years.
I congratulate the President-elect of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump, on his election. I wish him every success in carrying out his duties for the good of his country.
The office of President of the United States of America extends its responsibilities beyond its own national borders like no other in the world. That’s why I wish Donald J. Trump the same success in fulfilling America’s central role in peace, freedom and security in the world.
The United States of America was, is and remains Germany’s most important ally outside of Europe. Our peoples have a long friendship. Our countries share common values, interests and, as members of NATO, a collective promise of protection.
It is now particularly in the hands of us Germans and Europeans to shape relations with our most important ally. Europe must become capable of global politics on its own, take responsibility for its own security and lead its economies to new strength.
Only a Europe that is consolidated internally and united externally can be a partner on equal terms with the United States of America.”
