Tokyo, Nov 6 (EFE).- The Government of Japan affirmed this Wednesday its willingness to maintain its “broad collaboration” with the United States in matters of security and to maintain the current international order, regardless of who wins the presidential elections.

“We are closely monitoring the elections in the United States and their processes to see their possible influence,” said the spokesman for the Japanese Executive, Yoshimasa Hayashi, at a press conference today, when asked about the partial results that pointed to a foreseeable victory. of Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Hayashi did not want to comment on these results before they were final, but reaffirmed Tokyo’s willingness to maintain cooperation with Washington under the new Administration resulting from these elections.

“The alliance between Japan and the United States is the basis of Japan’s diplomacy and security,” said the Japanese spokesperson, referring to Japanese foreign policy and the military alliance in force since 1960 and which allows the presence of military bases. Americans on Japanese soil, in addition to the commitment to mutual defense.

“We will continue our cooperation in various fields and as global partners with a key role in maintaining a free and open international order, while strengthening the deterrence capacity of our alliance,” Hayashi said.

Trump’s return to the White House may mean that the Republican leader will once again demand that Japan increase its contributions for hosting US bases, a request that the former president launched during the campaign for other US allied countries, such as South Korea. EFE
