At 2:39 p.m., a magnitude 6 earthquake shook the southeast of the province of Cañete, with its epicenter 50 kilometers from Lunahuaná, according to the Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP). The movement surprised residents and workers in the Parade groundwhere Public Ministry personnel and passersby evacuated buildings in the first moments of the seismic event.
In the Plaza de Armas of Cañete, the staff of the Public Ministry and residents who were on the streets recounted how they experienced the moments of uncertainty. Immediately, citizens left their homes and offices to take shelter in open spaces, following earthquake safety protocols.
“Everyone came down because it felt strong, but people are calm and are already returning,” commented one of the citizens. While the students from the Varones de Cañete school left their classrooms to get to safe places.
The intensity of the earthquake was classified as V in Lunahuaná by the IGP, which generated alerts in surrounding areas and even in the city of Lima, where the telluric movement was perceived moderately in several districts.

The impact of the tremor extended beyond the province of Cañetereaching nearby regions such as Huancavelica and Ica. In Huancavelica, the districts of Huaytará, Castrovirreyna and Churcampa reported having felt the movement, while in Ica the earthquake was perceived with higher intensity in towns such as Chincha, Pisco and Paracas.

According to the information provided by local authorities to Indeci, the earthquake was perceived as strong in the provinces of Ica and Chincha (Ica); moderate in Nasca (Ica) and Castrovirreyna (Huancavelica); as well as mild in the provinces of Huamanga, Huanta (Ayacucho), Lima and Yauyos (Lima).
