As for when we will know who will be the next president of the United States, experts have warned that we may not know for a while whether it will be former President Donald Trump or Vice President Kamala Harris will win the presidential race.

In major states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvaniaclerks cannot process mail-in ballots before Election Day. In 2020, these states were decided by about 20,000 and 80,000 votes, respectively.

Experts told NBC Chicago that the gap between the candidates will play a big role when results are announced and what happens in the days after the election.

This time, both campaigns believe the race is very close in the seven key states expected to decide the election barring a major upset: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Carolina a North, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

However, a delay in a presidential race is not unheard of, according to Dr. Kevin Boyle, chair of Northwestern University’s history department.

“There are many stories of presidential candidates who went to sleep not knowing whether they had won the presidency or not,” Boyle said.

In 2020, four days passed before President Joe Biden was officially declared the winner. In 2000, the results depended on just 537 votes in Florida, and the television networks named Al Gore and then George Bush as the winner before declaring the race “too close to call a winner.”

“I want people not to be afraid of the election because we have gotten better at managing this election compared to 2000,” said Northwestern University Law School Professor Michael Kang. “The efficiency and professionalism with which elections are managed today is unmatched compared to 25 years ago.”

However, the 2016 election was decided just hours after most polls closed.
