(ANSA) – HAVANA, NOV 04 – The Cuban authorities have ordered the evacuation of at least 66,000 citizens living in the area around the city of Guantanamo due to the imminent arrival of a storm that could cause serious flooding. According to the Cuban Institute of Meteorology, the disturbance coming from Haiti could become a tropical cyclone before hitting Cuba. “We are permanently monitoring the meteorological situation in Cuba and its possible evolution,” Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel wrote in X announcing the measurements. The region is still dealing with the disruption caused two weeks ago by the passage of Hurricane Oscar which caused the death of eight people and damage to 12,000 homes and 600 public buildings. The new storm risks increasing the discontent of the population who have been facing the worst economic crisis since the 1990s since the beginning of the year, characterized by high inflation and difficulty in finding food and basic necessities. A scenario which has been compounded in recent weeks by the worsening of the energy emergency which has caused prolonged blackouts and daily rationing across much of the territory. (HANDLE).
