In 2012 it was released in cinemas Snow White and the Huntsmana modern rereading of the famous Brothers Grimm tale produced by Rupert Sanders (who here makes his first film). And the least we can say is that this revisitation of the literary classic was a great success internationally!
Result, in 2016, the French director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan has simply decided to tackle the sequel to this fantastic feature film. So, in The Hunter and the Ice Queenwe find Queen Ravenna and her sister Freya, determined to turn their evil power on the enchanted kingdom.
But their army, which nevertheless seems invincible, will face two major enemies: Eric and Sara, two lovers who once fought in the ranks of Queen Ravenna. A sequel which, admittedly, had less success at the box office, but garnered the same marks from the press and spectators.
Just like the first part, The Hunter and the Ice Queen benefits from an XXL and five-star cast: Charlize Theron (who initially refused to appear in this sequel), Jessica Chastain, Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart, Emily Blunt or even Liam Neeson. Just that!
A modern-day fairy tale
If you’re thinking of watching a faithful adaptation of Snow White, move on, because you might be disappointed. This is also what the narrator indicates:
“What does the mirror show you? What do you see? An old fairy tale. That of Snow White and how she defeated the evil queen, Ravenna, and then regained her place on the throne as it should be.
But there’s another story, one you’ve never heard of, one that happens long before the ‘they lived happily ever after and had many children’.
The Hunter and the Ice Queen differs from its predecessor, Snow White and the Huntsmanby its desire to be lighter: thus, exit the threatening forests and make way for a colorful universe tinged with magic. Additionally, most of the sets were hand-built to serve as a basis for the visual effects.
One thing is certain, the result is worthy of a fairy tale: enchanting forests, magical powers and grandiose costumes made by Colleen Atwoodawarded eight times for her work on Fantastic Beasts, Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Memoirs of a geisha or even Chicago.
