The county in the balance
Another battleground county near Lake Huron, won by Obama in 2012, Trump in 2016 and Biden in 2020 by just 303 votes. If Trump were to win back the county, it would be a sign, the Cook Political Report analyst points out, that polls have underestimated his support among whites without a college education.

American elections. Michigan joined the Union in January 1837. The state voted primarily Republican in presidential elections until the Great Depression. From the 1930s to the 1960s, he periodically alternated between the two parties. From 1972 to 1988, only the Republicans won. Then came the turning point, when he became part of the “blue wall” that voted Democratic in six consecutive presidential elections from 1992 to 2012.
INSIGHTS
Donald Trump narrowly flipped the state in 2016, defeating Hillary Clinton by just 0.2%.
This was the closest state by popular vote percentage that year. Joe Biden won by 2.8% in 2020, putting the state back in the Democratic column.
Michigan has experienced a significant economic crisis since the 1970s and has seen slow population growth compared to the rest of the country. It was the only state to actually lose population in the 2010 census. This trend has led to a reduction in electoral weight. After peaking at 21 in the 1970s, the state lost electoral votes after each subsequent census. A loss of one in the 2020 census brings him to 15 for the 2024 and 2028 presidential elections.
