Adonis Georgiadis gave a radio interview to Realfm 97.8 and among several issues he also spoke about the developments in Greek-Turkish, just a few days before the meeting of Giorgos Gerapetritis with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Hakan Fidan (8/11).
Initially, the Minister of Health stated that “Greece has an objective interest in calmness. Calm in the Aegean means more investments, more tourism, less expenses in the Armed Forces, a better and improved international image of the country. So for us, the calmness is good for us, and if you think that we have just come out of a ten-year financial crisis, it is good for us for simple reasons.
At the same time, he added that “we need time to strengthen the Armed Forces because of the lost decade. So for us, tranquility is a national interest. If for peace of mind, Mr. Gerapetritis must see Mr. Fidan every weekend, see him every weekend. This is what our national interest dictates.”
Also, the vice-president of New Democracy spoke about the criticism of “bowing down” and the reactions within the blue faction regarding the movements of Giorgos Gerapetritis (Samaras), noting that “it’s one thing that he meets him and another thing is that because he will meet him he will surrender the national sovereignty, as some traffic. No it will not surrender any national sovereignty. Mr. Gerapetritis cannot hand over national sovereignty even if he wanted to but the man doesn’t want to, he is a patriot like all of us.”
Finally, Adonis Georgiadis said “so the meetings are good to take place. I personally don’t have excessive expectations. I don’t expect Turkey to change its policy now.”
