Herbert, Mingo, Smith – the trades at the deadline

The trade deadline in the National Football League ends today. Quite a few players change teams at the last minute. TOUCHDOWN24 with the last player trades and changes of the season.

Khalil Herbert (Runningback)

Chicago Bears -> Cincinnati Bengals / Compensation: seventh round pick 2025

After Zack Moss’ neck injury, the Cincinnati Bengals have brought in reinforcements at the running back position. Khalil Herbert is moving from the Chicago Bears to the Bengals, who are giving up a seventh-round pick for 2025. In Chicago, Herbert was rarely used after four years and a total of 1,791 yards and nine touchdowns this season. With Herbert, Cincinnati gets a powerful runner to support Chase Brown in the backfield. Meanwhile, the Bears continue to rely on D’Andre Swift, Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer.

Jonathan Mingo (Wide Receiver)

Carolina Panthers -> Dallas Cowboys / Compensation: Fourth round pick 2025 (seventh round pick comes back)

Despite their previous record of 3-5, the Dallas Cowboys signed a player at the trade deadline. The Texans get wide receiver Jonathan Mingo from the Carolina Panthers and give a fourth-round pick for 2025 to Carolina, who in return also give up a seventh-round pick. Mingo, who was drafted in the second round in 2023, began his career with a solid 418 yards on 43 catches, but played a limited role this season. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had already indicated that they planned to take a receiver that Dallas missed in the last draft – apparently Mingo.

Za’Darius Smith (Defensive End)

Cleveland Browns -> Detroit Lions / Compensation: Fifth round pick 2025, sixth round pick 2026 (seventh round pick 2026 comes back)

The Lions, currently with a record of 7-1, have been desperate for reinforcements in the pass rush after Aidan Hutchinson will miss the rest of the season. Without Hutchinson, only defensive tackle Alim McNeill was able to generate consistent pressure recently, while the rest of the defensive line had problems. Smith, who already knows the NFC North from his time with the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, brings experience to the team and promises immediate improvement on defense. In return, the Lions give up a fifth-round pick for 2025 and a sixth-round pick for 2026 to Cleveland and receive Smith and a seventh-round pick for 2026 in return.
