LYRICS – General Secretary NATO Mark Rutte tried to reduce concerns about the potential impact of Donald Trump’s victory in the United States presidential election. He also reminded the US not to repeat mistakes like those made after the First World War.

Speaking at a press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, Rutte emphasized the resilience of the NATO alliance and the common interests between the allies.

“Whoever wins that election, we will work with Kamala Harris, we will work with Donald Trump, and we will make sure that the alliance remains united,” he said, as reported by Anadolu.

“I have no doubt because it is in our interest. “This is in our interest here (in Europe), but also for the United States,” he said. He added that the US would not “repeat the mistake” of withdrawing from Europe after the First World War.

“They (Americans) know that if (Russian President) Putin succeeds in Ukraine, Russia will by then be decorated in our east and will be a direct threat to NATO territory, ” he said.

The NATO leader’s comments come amid growing concerns among European allies about Trump’s possible return to the White House.

During his term, Trump openly criticized European NATO allies for failing to meet the alliance’s defense spending target of 2% of GDP. Trump argued that the US was bearing an unfair burden of NATO costs and threatened to withdraw from the alliance unless other members increased their contributions.

His stance strained relations with European leaders and raised questions about the future of the US commitment to transatlantic security.
