In New York, you can now cross any means legally

In New York, a strange law has just banned running red lights or crossing pedestrian crossings.

Do you want to walk down Fifth Avenue, through Greenwich Village or in the middle of Times Square like real New York (understand, crossing in a completely chaotic way, between two cars respecting your ability)? A special law can allow you to live your dream. This, which has just been adopted by the city of New York, now allows you to avoid waiting for the light to turn green or to cross a pedestrian crossing. And the locals, like foreign travelers, can benefit from it and thus navigate the streets of Manhattan as they wish, without worrying about any fines.

In detail, the city’s city council passed this law in September, but then had to wait thirty days, when the mayor, Eric Adams, could have vetoed it – which he didn’t. . This will officially come into effect in February 2025, allowing you to cross the road anywhere, outside a pedestrian crossing or without waiting at the lights turn green. Be careful, however: it still provides that pedestrians will not have priority if they do not cross the nails, and that they will give way to vehicles.

A law to reduce the injustice of racism

For supporters of the legislation, it will reduce the number of racist injustices: New York police officers are regularly accused of targeting people of color with fines for illegal crossings. According to a press release sent to CNN by Mercedes Narcisse, city councilor for District 46 in New York, these “racist fines” would represent more than 92% of tickets for crossing the road illegally in 2023.

However, the Anglo-Saxon media points out that the crossing must be done taking into account its environment, and they recommend continuing to use pedestrian walkways. It must be said that the practice, although it is a symbol of the lifestyle of New Yorkers, involves risks. According to a report from the city’s Department of Transportation, up to 200 people (34% of pedestrian deaths) have lost their lives in the past five years crossing the street in the middle of a block. , or not paying attention to the light.

New York is not the first city American to decriminalize this mode of crossing, until now illegal: Denver and Kansas City in Missouri, and several cities in California, Nevada and Virginia have also joined in recent years, according to America Walks, an organization that promotes the importance of walking in cities through various activities.
