The Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Lavrovhe says in an interview published this Friday by the Turkish newspaper Liberty what “The United States and Russia are on the brink of a direct military conflict”.
“Under the government of the current American president (Joe Biden), who has pushed the spiral of enmity with Russia to the limit, our countries are on the brink of a direct military conflict”says Lavrov.
In the interview, conducted after the group’s summit BRICS held last week in the Russian city of Kazanand in which Türkiye participated, Lavrov said he had no preferences regarding the candidates, the Republican Donald Trump and the democrat Kamala Harriswho compete for the presidency of the United States.
«We don’t have preferences. In the past, the Trump Administration has imposed a greater number of sanctions on Russia than its predecessors.says Lavrov.
“But whoever wins the elections, we don’t see any prospect that the Russophobia in the United States will change”added the minister who, at the same time, stressed his willingness for a “dialogue.”
“If the Americans show a serious intention to reach a sincere agreement based on the principle of mutuality and respect for the interests of both, we are willing to dialogue”says Lavrov.
The minister stressed that “Russia is open to a political solution” in Ukraine, but that this should not come in the form of “a temporary ceasefire” but rather an agreement that “eliminates the foundations of the conflict.”
Among these he mentioned “NATO’s expansion to the east”, the “threat to vital security interests for Russia” and “the violation of the rights of Russians and Russian speakers in Ukraine.”
But in the current situation, tension is only increasing, Lavrov lamented.
“Washington and its allies give all kinds of support to kyiv and debate a possible delivery of long-range missiles of Western manufacture to attack targets inside Russian territory”said.
“In this situation, it does not seem possible that any country, including Türkiye, can carry out successful mediation”concluded the minister. EFE (I)
