Music to slow down: Young people from Mülheim are planning Advent concerts

Mülheim. Three young people from Mülheim want to give contemplative concerts in churches during Advent. Why they advertise the profession of music teacher in schools.

They are young – but still find church songs beautiful: Àlmos Adam (violin, vocals), Jonas Berger (organ) and Tom Abernetty (flute) – all 20 years old – are studying music to become teachers at the Folkwang University in Essen and the University of Cologne, respectively . The three Mülheimers have discovered music beyond rock and rap and want to give four concerts with contemplative music in churches during Advent. There are already dates: On December 13th at 7 p.m. they will perform in the Markuskirche on Springweg, on December 20th at 7 p.m. in St. Theresia an der Kleiststrasse and on December 23rd at 6 p.m. in St. Joseph in Heißen.

The young musicians have already started practicing for their concert series. Everyone initially “trains” alone, later there will be four rehearsals together. The trio also knows: without advertising, there is no audience! This is how they announce their concerts: “We would like to get you in the mood for Christmas meditatively with our one-hour concert and create an atmosphere of peace and reflection. The concert promises to slow down in the often hectic pre-Christmas period. Let the music touch you and enjoy an hour full of harmony and Christmas magic!” Admission is free.

Three contemplative concerts in Advent in Mülheim churches

The musicians don’t want to reveal what exactly will be heard: well-known Christmas songs like “Joseph, dear Joseph my” will be there, as well as Christmas Carols, for example “Away in a Manger”. “The focus of the repertoire is on Christmas choral works, which are presented in special arrangements for organ, violin, flute and vocals. We would also like to introduce unknown Christmas songs,” says Jonas Berger. Visitors will also hear adaptations of classical works from Bach to Debussy.

So young – and church music? “During your studies you develop a different taste, beyond popular music. When you look at older works, you understand why some composers are so famous,” says Jonas Berger. He has been playing the drums since childhood, started playing the piano as a teenager and then learned the organ. He now represents the cantor of St. Theresia in church services.

Three young people from Mülheim recommend studying music to become teachers

All three people from Mülheim share the enthusiasm for studying music to become teachers and expressly recommend it to young people. “Unfortunately, there are too few people who want to do this course of study. The musical training is broad and exciting,” says Jonas Berger, he knows: “The students are passionate about the same things and are a great community.” Above all, it is incredibly fun to awaken the joy of music in children.
