Serbia: 14 killed in railway station roof collapse – Three days of mourning –

The death toll from the collapse of part of the roof at the Novi Sad railway station in Serbia has risen to fourteen. Three injured people are being treated at the hospital, two of them in a serious condition.

Searches by rescue crews to locate victims under the ruins appear to have been completed after work began to clear the site of the rubble.

The President of the Republic, Aleksandar Vucic, said in his speech that so far nine dead have been identified, eight are citizens of Serbia and one is a citizen of North Macedonia.

Vucic asked the supreme prosecutor’s office in Novi Sad to impose criminal responsibilities for the tragedy and announced the attribution of political responsibilities.

The Serbian government declared tomorrow a day of mourning for the entire country, while in the city of Novi Sad mourning will last three days.

Today at noon, the roof extension in front of the entrance to the railway station in Novi Sad collapsed.

The station has been renovated twice in the last four years. The second renovation was completed in July 2024. The renovation was carried out by a consortium of Chinese companies which, as alleged by the opposition at the time, received the project under opaque conditions.

The consortium of Chinese companies issued a statement this evening stating that “the part of the railway station in Novi Sad that collapsed was not the subject of works in the framework of the reconstruction of the station”.

In Novi Sad, citizens gather in the city center and light candles or leave flowers in honor of the victims of the tragedy.
