[스포츠W 임가을 기자] The original musical ‘Swag Age Shout, Chosun!’ presented its first overseas showcase through the ‘2024 K-Musical Roadshow in London’.
This event, held on the 4th at Lillian Bailey Studio in London, England, was designed to raise the international awareness of Korean musical works and expand overseas expansion opportunities, and was hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Arts Management Support Center.
The ‘K-Musical Roadshow in London’ featured three teams selected at the ‘Showcase’ of the ‘K-Musical International Market’ held in June.
‘Shout out Swag Age, Joseon!’ was evaluated by English-speaking producers at the previous showcase as “a work that well combines the specificity of Korean culture and universal thematic awareness.”
In this showcase, London-based directors, music directors, and actors prepared the stage and performed about 40 minutes of works including ‘The Land of Progenitors’, ‘Joseon’s Secret’, ‘This Is Playing with Noblemen’, ‘Is It Really Natural’, and ‘Fate’. Iconic scenes were presented as highlights.
The local creative team, the original Korean creative team, and the production company held several meetings to localize the work. It was said that the English script was completed under the principle that the meaning of each word and every syllable in the melody were reviewed and modified, and that although the method of conveying the meaning may be different, the message of the work remains intact.
Jasmine Tao, who directed the film, is a director who is attracting attention in the London theater world for her works that address social issues. He won the ‘Best New Play Raising Awareness’ award at the London Pub Theaters Standing Ovation Award for his play ‘The Bevin Boys’, and has formed a consensus with audiences with ‘These Demons’ and ‘Qibla’.
After finishing this showcase, Jasmine Tao said, “Getting to know the background knowledge of other cultures and localizing it was a really new experience and a good study.”
The music director is Flynn Sturgeon, who is the music director of the musical ’42 Balloons’ and is actively working with British performers. The English embellisher is the music director, lyricist, and arranger of the musicals ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Spring Awakening’. Eleanor Cousins, who is also active in Garo, participated.
Among the cast, the role of ‘Dan’ is played by Benjamin Karan, who played the lead role in the UK tour of the musicals ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Titanic’, and the role of ‘Jean’ is played by Aoif Hackenson, who played the role of Catherine Parr in the UK tour of ‘Six the Musicals’. This was in charge.
In addition, the role of ‘Hongguk’ is played by Matt Harropp, who played the role of Firmin in the West End’s ‘Phantom of the Opera’ for four years and has played an active role in many works such as ‘Les Miserables’ and ‘Cats’, and the role of ‘Ten Weeks’ Niall Sheehy, who appeared in the West End’s ‘Miss Saigon’ and ‘Les Miserables’, played the role.
In addition, a total of 10 actors, including members of the secret progenitor group Golbindang, who plays the role of ‘Horosoe’, Raquel Jones as ‘Pure’, and Adam Rhys-Charles as Ki-seon, wear Korean masks on stage and spread fans to express ‘hope’. and performed the song ‘Freedom’.
Writer Park Chan-min, who attended the showcase of ‘Shout out Swag Age, Joseon!’ at the site, said, “It was a new experience to see our story being presented in faraway England, and compared to what I had expected, the discussion with the local creative team and actors was a truly enjoyable experience. “I was deeply moved by the realization of what I had dreamed of when I first started working on this work,” he said.
Meanwhile, ‘Swag Age Shout, Chosun!’ premiered in 2019 and won the Male and Female Rookie Award at the ‘4th Korea Musical Awards’, was nominated in 11 categories including the Grand Prize and Best Picture, won the Ensemble Award at the ‘8th Yegreen Musical Awards’, and won the ‘8th Yegreen Musical Awards’ Ensemble Award. He won Best Picture, Best Choreography, and Best New Male Actor at the 5th Korea Musical Awards.
