“Hard-fought victory” for handball lynxes in the northern derby

On the sixth matchday of the Women’s Handball Bundesliga, the Handball Lynxes Buchholz 08-Rosengarten celebrated their first home win of the season. In a nerve-wracking derby against SV Werder Bremen, the Lynx narrowly prevailed 28:27 in front of their home crowd.

Although the Lynx had to compete with a weakened squad due to injuries and illness, they got off to a brilliant start. With a 5-0 run and early goals from Nantke Ackmann and Luisa Marla Hinrichs, they initially took a clear lead, which forced Bremen coach Timm Dietrich to call the first timeout in the fifth minute. “We started the match extremely badly,” Dietrich had to say.

Afterwards, the Bremen team found their way back into the game better: Elaine Rode and Chiara Thorn led Werder closer with important goals until the guests finally reduced the lead to 8:9 and were even able to take the lead for a short time. However, the Lynxes reacted promptly and went into the half-time break with a narrow 14:12 lead.

In the second half the game remained highly competitive and thrived on the intense derby atmosphere. Both teams exchanged blows openly and gave each other nothing. Jana Pollmer, who had spontaneously agreed to support the team due to the tense personnel situation, brought the Lynx team back into the game with her goal in the 44th minute to equalize at 19:19. From then on the derby was a neck-and-neck race and the tension in the hall rose to immeasurable heights.

The last five minutes, when the score was 23:23, became a battle of nerves. Luisa Marla Hinrichs, who scored a total of seven goals that evening, converted an important seven-meter penalty in the 56th minute and put the Lynxes ahead 26:25. But Werder couldn’t be shaken off and equalized again. After Finja Harms took the lead to make it 27:26, Mathilda Häberle immediately countered to make it 27:27. However, 40 seconds before the end, Luisa Marla Hinrichs finally put the Lynxes on the road to victory with her last goal.

In the game, goalkeeper Anja Rossignoli surpassed herself: with several decisive saves, she maintained the narrow lead and secured the Lynx a deserved victory. Her confident demeanor and reflexes made the fans in the hall cheer and made the difference in this hard-fought game. “Unfortunately, we missed too many scoring opportunities to leave the field as winners,” said Dietrich, mourning the missed opportunities.

Coach Dubravko Prelcec was relieved and proud after the game: “It was a hard-fought victory and I am proud of the team. Despite the absences and the hectic preparation, the players showed great morale and fought until the last second.”

Thanks to this first home win of the season, the Luchse stay in the middle of the table with 4:8 points and climb to 13th place. After this defeat, SV Werder Bremen remains in last place in the table with 2:14 points, despite having played two more games.
