(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seongho Seong = The number of emergency medicine specialists at regional and regional emergency medical centers designated at the general hospital level or higher continues to increase.

Ahead of last Chuseok, there was a risk of emergency medical collapse, but the reality was different. The emergency medical community analyzed that the ‘realization’ of compensation was effective due to the increase in specialists.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare on the 5th, based on data reported by each medical institution to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of emergency medicine specialists in 180 regional and regional emergency medical centers was 1,604 as of the 28th of last month.

Compared to the end of last year (1,504 people), before residents collectively resigned in protest against the policy to increase the number of medical school students, the number of emergency medicine specialists increased by 6.7%.

Although the circumstances may vary for each individual center, the number of emergency medicine specialists working at these 180 medical institutions increased by 26 in the past month alone.

As of September 2 (1,577), when there were concerns that emergency room treatment would be paralyzed due to a shortage of doctors ahead of this year’s Chuseok holiday (September 15-18), the number of emergency medicine specialists was higher than at the end of last year.

According to the Emergency Medical Services Act, regional emergency medical centers are generally designated among tertiary general hospitals or general hospitals with more than 300 beds, and regional emergency medical centers are designated among general hospitals.

The emergency medicine community explains that the ‘realization of compensation’ is behind the increasing trend of specialists in these centers.

Lee Gyeong-won, professor of emergency medicine at Yongin Severance Hospital (public affairs director of the Korean Society of Emergency Medicine), said, “There is a time lag between statistics and reality, but it is true that the number of specialists is increasing,” adding, “The number of doctors has also increased because direct compensation from the government has increased.” said.

Previously, the government invested health insurance funds to increase specialist consultation fees by 250% at regional and specialized emergency medical centers and by 150% at local emergency medical centers.

Regarding the addition of consultation fees, Professor Lee emphasized, “Rather than simply increasing the amount of money received by emergency medicine specialists, it is a realization of compensation, which has been low compared to the reality of emergency medicine.”

He also said, “It is fortunate that the government has decided to maintain the increased consultation fees until the ‘severe’ stage of the health care disaster crisis is over.” He added, “However, if this is not institutionalized in the future, emergency medical care may truly collapse by then.” did it
