In autumn 2022, 27 facilities for asylum seekers were still in operation throughout Austria. In Styria, only one facility in Graz-Andritz will be active in the future.
The federal asylum care facility in Kindberg, Styria (Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district) will be shut down at the beginning of the second half of November. The federal care in Semmering had already been closed in September. In the future, only the facility in Graz-Andritz will be active in Styria, the Interior Ministry announced.
Because the number of asylum applications has fallen sharply, more and more federal care facilities have recently been closed. In autumn 2022, 27 such facilities for asylum seekers were still in operation throughout Austria, but this has now been reduced by more than half.
The former Kindberg nursing home was bought by a real estate company and rented to the Federal Agency for Care and Support Services (BBU) from the end of 2022. In February 2023, the occupancy took place with people with special care needs, such as physical ailments. The Interior Ministry said that the agreed maximum occupancy of 250 people was only reached for a short time. Since April 2023, an average of 50 to 60 people in Kindberg have received basic care.
There are currently eleven federal care facilities in operation throughout Austria. In addition to Kindberg, these include facilities in Traiskirchen, Schwechat, Ossiach, Villach, Finkenstein, Graz-Andritz, Bad Kreuzen, Thalham, Bergheim and Fieberbrunn. The existing federal care facilities are currently half full, which is why further federal basic care facilities in various federal states will be shut down in the coming weeks, the Interior Ministry announced. A total of 1,514 people are currently in federal basic care facilities. As of October 1, 2024, a total of around 27,300 asylum seekers and those entitled to subsidiary protection were receiving basic care. (APA)
