Decentralized IDs and the future of the customer journey

Why the E-ID is important, what effects instant payments will have, how Bitcoin is developing and what the Swiss Stable Coin can achieve.

Developments and technologies relating to money and payments have changed a lot in recent years – and the main upheavals are still to come.

The Swiss Payment Forum In its 13th edition, it takes an in-depth look at the relevant developments that shape the financial industry.

Focus topic: Decentralized IDs and the future of the customer journey

The focus at this year’s Swiss Payment Forum: improving the customer journey through the use of decentralized identities (IDs). While the customer journey has been intensively researched in recent years, onboarding new customers, particularly for online purchases, remains a key challenge. Decentralized IDs could make a decisive contribution to optimizing the process and significantly reducing the abandonment rate.

The current practice of digital onboarding is often complicated and too repetitive for many users, which leads to abandoned purchases at the beginning of the customer journey. A secure and efficient electronic identity (E-ID) could change this. The onboarding process would be significantly simplified, the acceptance of digital services would be increased and the digital transformation in Switzerland would be further advanced.

After the failure of the E-ID law in the 2021 referendum, the National Council and the Council of States took decisive steps towards introducing the E-ID in 2024. There is little time left until the planned introduction in 2026 to ensure seamless integration into existing systems. At the Swiss Payment Forum 2024, the topic will be examined from different perspectives. Both the opportunities and the risks are discussed.
