The Lucca Comics & Games 2024 program was full of special events, ranging from workshops to concerts, from film screenings to cosplay competitions.
This is the official press release on the awards of the 2024 edition: “The awards ceremony of the Lucca Comics & Games Awards 2024 at the Teatro del Giglio began with the presentation of the ‘Lucca Comics Awards‘ – the Italian “Oscars” of the comic – whose winners took the stage or were represented by their publishers to accept the prestigious awards. This year’s jury consisted of Francesca Ghermandi, author and winner of the Gran Guinigi for best drawing in 2023; Marco Nucci, author and winner of the Gran Guinigi for best short comic or collection in 2023;
Michela “Sonno” Rossi, author and winner of the Gran Guinigi for an editorial initiative – “Stefano Beani Award” in 2023; Ilaria Ravarino, journalist for Il Messaggero; Pio Corveddu, member of the festival’s cultural staff. The “Gran Guinigi best short comic” was awarded to “I hate the Summer by Kalina Muhova (Rulez)”, a story that tells a few months in the lives of two people and highlights the deep, complicated and precious bond between mother and daughter. As the story progresses, we learn not to be ashamed, not to let ourselves be moved to tears, not to be afraid of hugs, but also to recognize fear.
The plot engages the reader immediately and flows with the intensity and rhythm of a short film. A painful autobiographical journey, but enlivened by a painful and resigned, sometimes naive irony that illuminates every table with colors that hover between laughter, discomfort and emotion, typical of Muhova’s style, which for the occasion reduces the technique of his drawing , to bring out the essence of the story with a simple symbol. A trembling drawing that almost does not want to be born and reluctantly exposes itself to the reader’s eyes, ultimately destined to be loved.
Odio l’estate manages to talk in detail about generational and family relationships, about alternative medicine, cultures and religions without showing it, with the enlightened step of incomprehension. The “Gran Guinigi” for the best series comic went to “Hira Yasumi” by “Keigo Shinzo (J-POP Manga)”, defined by the jury as “a work that is not only beautifully written, but above all lasts a long time and calm tones. In both the drawings and the script it is an artistically radical act and anything but self-evident.”
Hira Yasumi is a manga that follows the lives of Hiroto Ikuta and his eighteen-year-old cousin Natsumi Kobayashi, who moves in with him after the death of an elderly woman from whom Hiroto inherited the house. A story that invites us to reflect on the importance of human relationships, kindness and small daily joys, and shows us that beyond societal expectations, connection with others really matters. A reading that, with its sweet and nostalgic tone, manages to touch the deepest strings of the human soul.” Salvatore Trifiletti @Shiatrif for ENA
