Caicedo’s volley seals a 1-1 draw for Chelsea against Man United. Tottenham beat Aston Villa 4-1

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — A sensational volley by Ecuador midfielder Moisés Caicedo ended a 1-1 draw for Chelsea on Sunday when they visited Manchester United at a side that capped a tumultuous week with its worst start to the league in 40 years.

Facing pop star Olivia Rodrigo at Old Trafford, Caicedo’s shot from the edge of the box in the 74th minute sealed the score after captain Bruno Fernandes had put the hosts ahead with a penalty just four minutes earlier.

Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the Premier League ahead of Arsenal thanks to a better goal difference. United are 13th, six points behind, trying to get into the fight for places to get to the next Champions League.

United have 12 points. According to Opta, the Premier’s official data platform, this is his worst autumn after 10 games since the 1986-87 season.

In the first hour, Tottenham destroyed Aston Villa 4-1.

This was United’s first game in the Premier League since Erik ten Hag was sacked on Monday. Ruben Amorim has been named as his permanent successor, but will not take office until November 11.

“Every time a coach goes down, you have to take part of the blame, which has had a negative effect on the team,” said Fernandes. “I spoke to the coach (Ten Hag) and apologized to him. “I was disappointed that he had to go and I tried to encourage him.”

Assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy was left on as an interim.

After beating Leicester 5-2 in the League Cup on Wednesday, United took the lead when Fernandes converted a penalty and looked to bounce back.

But Caicedo’s goal ensured that points were distributed.

Tottenham vapulea and Villa

Dominic Solanke beat Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez twice in four second-half minutes at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after Villa went into the break with the lead.

Solanke scored in the 75th and 79th in a devastating display for Spurs who had just beaten Manchester City in the League Cup on Wednesday.

Morgan Rogers put Villa ahead in the 32nd minute, but Brennan Johnson tied the game four minutes after the restart.

Solanke’s double put Tottenham 3-1 up and James Maddison scored from a free-kick in the sixth minute of added time.

Tottenham’s victory left them in seventh place in the standings. Villa finished fifth after missing the chance to break into the top three.
