The Silver Arrows had a weekend to forget in Brazil. Once again. The German racing team currently only sees the taillights of the top teams McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull in Formula 1. On the Interlagos circuit in São Paulo, Lewis Hamilton (39) and George Russell (26) were only able to score 16 points together. Far too little for the racing team’s demands.
But it could have been even worse. Mercedes was threatened with subsequent disqualification after the Brazilian Grand Prix! An already unsuccessful weekend would have reached another negative peak.

The trigger for the investigation against the seven-time world champion’s team was a technical violation that was discovered by both the Brit and his compatriot Russell. The racing team had incorrectly changed the tire pressure on the starting grid for both cars.
This is generally allowed – but not if the tires are mounted on the cars. Mercedes ignored this. The result: a fine of 10,000 euros, which the team has to pay to the Fia.

However, the world association showed mercy. Reason: extenuating circumstances. On the one hand, Mercedes changed the values within the permitted limits, and on the other hand, there were logistical problems for which the Silver Arrows were not responsible. A gate through which the Silver Arrows staff wanted to access the track was opened late. In addition, the route to the cars on the Interlagos grid is longer than usual.
Mercedes will not worry much about the punishment. For the team it will be nothing more than a side note. Coming to terms with the past Grands Prix will be much more important. Engineer Andrew Shovlin (51): “There is a lot to analyze and learn this weekend – and that also applies to the last three races. We will focus on that in the coming days to create a solid foundation for the final triple-header of the season.”
