Brain Gain: Where do those who returned to Greece work? [πίνακες] –

The return of the Greeks, who left the country during the years of the financial crisis, the so-called Brain Gain is dynamically reshaping the Greek market, with IT standing out as a top attraction.

The brain drain was an intense phenomenon of that time and led thousands of young Greeks abroad in search of opportunities and work.

According to the new data, this wave has not only slowed down, but there is now also the reverse movement, the so-called brain gain, the return of those who left.

Research by the National Center for Documentation and Electronic Content on Brain Gain highlights the gain for the Greek economy from the return of specialized personnel, as the largest percentage (three out of four) state that the experience abroad made them more competitive and apply to their current work in Greece, the know-how and skills they acquired abroad.

New technologies and IT offer innovative jobs and competitive packages, encouraging more and more Greek professionals to leave abroad and invest their skills in Greece. This promising sector is fueling domestic growth, creating opportunities for a modern and robust digital economy.

The return to Greece seems to have strengthened the Greek economy overall, thus contributing to further development.

The main employment sectors of those who returned are the following: New Technologies – Information Technology (10%), Construction (11%), Education (10%), Consulting Services (7), Health (7%), Wholesale – Retail Trade (6% ), Tourism (6%).

The largest percentage of human resources (46%) is employed in Greek companies and organizations, while 21% declares “self-employed/freelancer”.

7% work remotely for a company/organization abroad.

Regarding monthly earnings in Greece (gross monthly), 44% receive earnings above 1,500 euros (27% from 1,501 to 3,000 euros, 17% from 3,001 euros and above).

67.6% of those who chose to return to Greece have a family.

Also, 52% of respondents have children. Regarding professional status, 50% work in the private sector, 26% have developed entrepreneurial activity (21% self-employed and 5% business owners), and only 11% work in the public sector.
